Global Doodle Gems & Kleurglossy (Translation of the article)

You all knew that we are in the Dutch magazine “Kleurglossy” from publisher Personalia, but for the most of you, it was not possible to read the article…of course I thought of a solution, and asked my friend and colorist Leo Delescen (AKA Nightcolorist) to translate the article for you. Thank you very much for your time Leo!

We had a small talk about our great book GDG “The directory of Who’s Who”. It is a petty that they forgot to mention the blog about the book, that the biggest colorgroup of The Netherlands made, “Kleuren voor Volwassenen”. Because that was a part of this adventure! But let us start, so you can read yourself!
20161203_081628

Global Doodle Gems is a worldwide collaboration of over 130 committed artists, illustrators and colorists. It was launched last year by 42 year old Danish artist Maria Wedel. And it catches on. By now almost a hundred coloring books have been published with contributions of countless Global Doodle Gems artists. And it is still counting… A conversation with Maria and her Dutch right hand Johanna Ans van den Broek about the how and why of this colorful initiative.
20161203_081641

It all started when I received requests from several artists within my network for coloring in my drawings before I myself had the time for that. That’s funny, I thought, maybe this is a way to bring together artists who love drawing and coloring together. Without hindrance of publishers who’s only goal is to make profit but instead the possibility of publishing by a group of people and keep ownership of our own work. Thus the idea of Global Doodle Gems sprang into life in 2015. So I already posessed a network of artists. I decided to ask them if they would be interested in joining me.Within no time a group of 50 people was formed. And now there are already 130 enthusiastic and creative people in this collaboration.

OWNERSHIP OF YOUR OWN CREATIONS

The Global Doodle Gems netwerk is spreading and extending. From the Philippines to Taiwan and from the United States to Denmark. Those who want to join the worldwide network must of course have a lot to offer but in particular they must have a distinctive style of drawing. At the moment there are eight Dutch participants active in the Global Doodle Gems network. One of them is 50 year old Johanna Ans van den Broek who came in contact with Maria Wedel indirectly: “I knew Maria’s work and the idea of creating a companionship of like minded people appealed to me very much, especially the part where you always keep ownership of your work. Often a coloring picture or book is published by a publisher who then owns copyright and also receives all additional revenues. At Global Doodle Gems the artists are put first. It is a wonderful platform to share work, both for newbies and advanced artists.

UNIQUE COLOR EXPERIENCE

The good thing is that we all love to draw and to colored but each has his or her own style. And that is exactly what we want to achieve: to bring together all the different styles into one unique color experience. So you work individually but make a book together. We publish several kinds of books, including the so called Volume books which contain sixty coloring pictures by ten different artists. Those whitin our network who are interested can subscribe in advance. The only demand is that the drawing must be ‘clean’, so no traces of erasing, pencil strokes or sloppy lines. The picture must be ready to be colored in immediately. Maria is the one who coordinates all requests. “Sometimes this causes stress. There are quite a lot of people I have to ‘manage’ and things to handle. Luckily Johanna Ans provides support and help, like promotional work as there is the maintenance of our Facebook page or writing blogs for our website.”

OUTLET

To Johanna Ans Global Doodle Gems means more than drawing and writing blogs: “It’s an outlet, or rather a lifebuoy that came at the exact right moment in my life. For some time now I have been struggling with my health. In 2013 I suffered from a brain hemorrhage. I was depressed and had mood swings. Thanks to my work for Global Doodle Gems some tranquility came back into my life. And even more, it restore confidence. Sketching, coloring and writing give me joy. I color since I was eight years old and I’m happy to say that this passion never goes away. Coloring is a thing that comes from deep inside, out of the heart. I always tell others: you don’t need to stay within the lines, just let yourself go. Practice the ‘just do whatever you like’ technique. And it really does not matter with which materials you color. Whether they are inexpensive colored pencils from a budget store like Lidl or a beautiful Caran d’Ache Pablo set (which by the way are my favorites): it’s the hand that colors, not the material.”

WOOD YOU COLOR ME?

At the moment Johanna Ans is working on projects……
20161203_081647
….that have a Dutch dimension: “I cannot tell much at this stage but together with some Dutch Doodle Gems artists we are working on a book titled “Typical Dutch” which will contain coloring pictures with typical Dutch subjects like windmills and cheese. Also I am working on “Wood you color me”? It’s all in the name: it is a coloring book that revolves around wood. The cover is colored in by Wendy Hofstee of Wendy Kleurt! I was also involved with making the Global Doodle Gems book “Directory of Who’s Who” (in this issue of Kleurglossy you can find several drawings from this publication). This book is published in cooperation with Adult Coloring Worldwide and is aimed at adult colorists. In it there are 119 designs on as many pages with mentioning the name of the artist. A beautiful coloring book that lets you meet the artists and their styles. Oh, and I will publish a calender book. Not to mention all the regular duties.

TALENTED ARTISTS

Not only Johanna Ans is very active within the Global Doodle Gems community, all artists are. New titels are published every month. Besides the Volume books Global Doodle Gems publishes theme books (like flowers or mandalas) and seasonal books (Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine Day). The Volume Mini collection is also popular. “And so covenient! The paperback size fits your bag perfectly. It’s nice to take with you and color in a train or while waiting somewhere”, Johanna Ans says. The books sell very well in the USA but in Netherlands and other countries they do well also. “We have so many talented artists in our ranks. Not only women but men also. From Taiwan there are Mr. End and Pica Wu. And from the Philipines our very talented young man Alfred E. Villanueva. Sketching for Global Doodle Gems provides him with the opportunity for a better life. I am glad that he is well. Looking at myself, I cannot make a living of the revenues. But that is not what I am aiming at. For me Global Doodle Gems is a meaningful way to pass the time. And if at the end I do manage to make a profit than that’s all the better.” Johanna Ans says.

THE LARGEST PUBLISHER OF COLORING BOOKS

Now that Global Doodle Gems made a successful start it is time to grow further according to Maria. The ultimate goal is to become the largest independent publisher of coloring books. At the moment it is mainly charitable work but in the long run it has to become profitable. “We finance new publications with the profits of existing ones, after settling the artist’s royalties. Profits of the mini books where artists participate voluntarily benefit Global Doodle Gems entirely. As for the rest, we try to draw attention in all possible ways. In countries where we are represented our artists show the public who we are and what we do via Facebook and by other means. But the most important thing is that we provide colorists around the world a beautiful and unique coloring experience.”

GDG “Annual Colorist Choice Collection 2016”, personal review

GDG “Annual Colorist Choice Collection 2016”, personal review

When you have a B-Day to celebrate, you have to do something special, and we as Global Doodle Gems, did something really special together with our colorists from our fangroup

Cover Colorist Choice 2016
Ultimate Global Doodle Gems Adult Coloring Collection… Chosen by colorists ! We had a huge nomination round on our Global Doodle Gems Coloring Group, colorists nominated their favorite drawings by submitting their colored pieces from the Global Doodle Gems Books published from the first year July 2015 to April 2016. Over 500 Drawings were nominated for the book. We had a Jury of 7 Judges from the large Coloring Groups, vote on their favourites and here is the result, We hope you will enjoy it ! The Cover was colored by Vero Pignot and the colored piece on the cover was chosen from all the nominated colored pieces… then Vero was asked to color the back with the portrait of Maria Wedel, the founder of Global Doodle Gems, in the same style. Cover drawings are by Orbleu’s and Alfred E. Villanueva.

Let us take a look inside this gorgeous and big book!

There are so many different artists in this book, and a lot of my favorites, that I did not let my eyes choose, but a random pick up…. just opened the book somewhere, and started to color. The first that came out was a drawing from Leen Margot (GDG Harmony)
20160722_102302
I made a small video of this coloring, how that I worked with Caran d’Ache Neopastel 1, for me also it was the first time to work with that material, And I really do love the stuff…it is up to you if you should like to use it in your books too.

The second drawing that I did was from artist Ena Tera (Global Doodle Gems Volume 7), and YES! a mandala, I love to color mandala’s. Now I have to tell you a secret, I colored with Faber Castel Polychromos! Is that something strange? Yes for me it is, they are not coloring pencils for me, “just” blender pencils for my favorites, the Caran d’Ache Pablo! I am happy with the result, but no, these Polychromos are really not “my” pencills.
20160724_110702-1

The 3rd coloring that I picked was from artist Ahmed Fouad, I love his work, really love his work! This one is in GDG Mandala Collection Volume 1, an early drawing from him, he grew so hard, his work became more and more better, and I am addicted to his drawings. I colored with Steadtler Triplus Brilliance, Stabilo 88 and my favorites, Caran d’Ache Pablo
20160725_224211-1

What will the 4th blind choice bring me, oh, a drawing from my friend Lilan Chen from Taiwan. I reallized, that I never colored one of hers before…I must be ashamed a little. But here I go, this drawing is also in GDG Minicollection Volume 4, and not only in, it is on the cover too! I show you hers too, because the way she colored, is gorgeous, she used pointillisme technique! I only used 7 colors of Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer (I had them from a friend to try her oldies) and my Sakura Koi Waterbrush
20160728_132720  Mini volume 4

I will show you the video that I made from all 4 drawings if you like to see the work in progress too!

And I did more colorings, before this book started to become the colorist choice. I will show those to you just for inspiration!

GDG Lowbudget coloring… low material or colors, much effect by Johanna Ans

Low budget coloring… minimal materials or colors can still lead to great effects by Johanna Ans

This is the step by step coloring that I will be showing you…(my way of course!) hihi

GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (10)

I want to show you that you can get a great end result in coloring with some simple tricks- even when you have low budget materials and minimal range of shades you can end up with a nice piece of work. Without fluids, papersticks… just coloring.

I got myself the alcoholmarkers from Tigerstore (set of 18 colors), the cheapest pastel Crayons-Van Eyck from the Action , Bruynzeel Holland pencils (set of 60 colors including 12 metallics),fineliners from Bruynzeel MXZ (set of 12) , 1 Colorgel sparkles gelpen form the budgetstore, and a little moist cloth.

I have chosen an artpiece to color from Peggy Sue Karunding who is in  Global Doodle Gems Flowercollection Volume 1 .

Peggy loves my coloring skills, and I love her drawings, and that’s why I had to challenge myself to start coloring flowers. I was not interested in coloring flowers before, just because I thought I couldn’t… but do you know what? with coloring you can do whatever you like, fantasy or realistic, even in between… and that is just what I did. But let’s get started…

I started to color the little bubbles in the heart of the flower, with the fineliners. I only have one brown and a green, and my brown colored gel pen. I also colored under the wings of the bumble-bee…. The bumble-bee I colored all yellow with my alcohol markers, and in the “wet” ink, I put some brown to make the ‘black’. because of the wet ink, the brown will flow a little and that gives the bumble-bee his ‘fluffiness’.
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (1)

The next step is with the Van Eyck soft pastel crayons. With my finger I picked up the darkest brown color and I ‘turned’ my finger over the paper. Pushing harder gives deeper color and different shades of brown. I used the red brown color with the same technique to mix the colors a little. Then I grabbed my alcohol marker, the lightest of 2 yellows that I have, and using the wide point I colored fast over the petals. Don’t be too careful, because when you go fast, you have lots of different shades of yellow! And don’t forget, go over the edges with your yellow… it highlights the black lines, that you just covered with pastel!
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (2)

The next step was to introduce different shades in the yellow. In my coloring set of pastels there is a second yellow and a warm grey… a bit of encoragement needed here and there on the edges and not how I would normally do it…. but now you have colored your first sunflower!

Look, not bad at all… is it?
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (3)

But now, the bumble-bee, I want to see him more ‘alive’. I grabbed my black and white pencil… accentuated the outside lines with black… a little bit furry because of his soft coat. Then with the white pencil, I colored the whole of the wings- it becomes a little blurry under it… so now you have made transparent bumble-bee wings!
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (4)

When I started on the next group of sunflowers, I grabbed my darkest yellow alcohol marker, and again went quickly over the paper with the wide point. If you go as close to the edges as you dare with quick coloring, you can again see all different shades of dark yellow. Get your warm grey, and why not, the orange marker to make the accents as you did before….
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (5) GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (6)

So you can see that with just 4 colors of alcohol markers, you can make a difference, a nice effect. Don’t think to much, let you inner child go, and you will see that you can do it too! I chose some sunflower leaves to be green leaves, to give it a little depth in the middle. I used the dark green alcohol marker for the accent and went right over it with the light green… perfect flow of colors… and that subtle green, makes it just a bit more alive.

Next, again with the wide point of the alcohol marker, but now the lighter green to color the leaves. The dark green for the veins of the leaf. I only have 2 colors of green, so I grabbed 2 green pencils to shade a little more… this works pretty fine on markers, and it is just a simple trick when you don’t have many shades of alcohol markers. Then I got my red brown pastel crayon, to give a little bit more ‘accent’ to the hearts of the flower-just some scratches, and then I patted with my finger to smooth.
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (7)

I filled in the ‘holes’ between the leaves with 2 colors of dark blue pencil, and I blended them together with the white pencil. This gives you a nice, smooth result, and you can still see that you colored it with pencil.. I see grass hills above the flowers, so it thought it would be nice to let the sun come up above those hills. I started with a red pencil, then 2 different shades of orange and on the edge a dark yellow pencil. To blend them together I used a light yellow pencil as a blender. Then I took my 2 dark blue pencils and an extra light blue… because the sun is rising, it has to become lighter! The obvious choice  was to use the white pencil again, to bring the blue colors together. Lastly, I grabbed the lightest yellow again, and ‘pull’ with the pencil from the edge of the sun into the blue… only a little so you have a nice gradient.

After that I started with my grass hills. Again I used the wide point of the light green marker, fast… forget the ‘detail” between the small leaves… because we will do that with pencil, one shade darker. Also with the small point of the marker, go over the green for some accents… so what you see is just one green marker with a lot of different shades!
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (8)

On the last row of sunflowers, I started with the hearts of the flowers, with 3 shades of brown-color in with the lightest brown, then from the edges to the middle the dark brown, smooth and go over it with the red brown… leave a  small line of the light color open! This is the moment that I grab my moist cloth, put it on my finger and I dab softly on the pastel hearts.. Pastel will smooth the black lines, and I want to see them better… by doing this, the color will stay on your paper, but the black lines will be easier to see!
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (9)

Then, the last sunflower… again I started with the wide point, the lightest yellow, grabbed the brown grey and the dark yellow marker to make some accents…. all the same colors in the first place, but all kind of different sunflowers at the end. I am very happy with my sunflower coloring, what do you think?
GDG Flowers-1-PSK-JH (10)

I hope that it helped you to be more confident, and that I was clear enough to all of you, so that you can do this too… with less or cheap materials. I know, expensive materials CAN help, but its not needed.

“It’s the hand that colors, not the material”, I have been telling people that for more than 20 years! I even made a drawing of it… feel free to print and color it…

Twister Gems Doodle Do Book

It is one of the most difficult things-to write a review about your own book… so we had to do something different. We gave a “do a chapter” challenge for our colorists on our FB page:  Global Doodle Gems
First we shall take a look inside this book…

We kijken eerst even in het boek…

The first person that sent in her finished chapter is Jasmijn van Binsbergen
And she wrote this to me:

The cat can be filled in so many different ways but I followed my first intuition. I am a person who wants to do something perfect but tried to leave that behind me. Intuition is also ok! I didn’t wanted to fill it in so that it looked too busy with too many patterns but also I didn’t want to make it too clean to avoid big spaces. So I created spirals as the fur. It’s quite difficult to fill in the already made patterns but they also help with the creating.
The story I wanted to give was an effect as if the cat has a zentangle band around it. Drawing was very nice to do and I wanted to do it more and more. After that, the coloring also gives you lots of options. I copied the page to color it again in different colors in the future. The cat is colored with koh-i-noor gioconda because I can blend and create effects easily with them. Despites making the same cat twice, I really didn’t have the inclination to do the page twice. The drawing and coloring are really different processes. But both very fun!

Thanks for the idea of using zentangle and color together. I will continue with that idea!

Thank you Jasmijn, great job you did! And I’m happy to read that you really had fun!

The second chapter that I got in my mail is from Laurence Roucou and she wrote this about her chapter:
A big challenge and a great experience for me who is not a designer, to meet the challenge of Johanna : finish one of her drawings and coloring .It is not perfect ( irregular features …), but I have been able to unleash my creativity and it amused me ! I used Faber Castell Polychromos,  pens and digital background. Johanna thank you .

Johanna, bedankt.

How great to see, how Laurence worked on this drawing! Really nice pattern.

What a gorgeous result Laurence, thank you very much for your help!

rrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The third set in my mailbox is from colorist Alison Civil and she wrote this to me:

Hi Johanna, here are my doodled and coloured versions of your pics.
I loved being able to doodle on the WIPS and put my own mark on them, and then compare them to your drawings too.  I love the idea of the book containing drawings to add to as well as colour.
Best wishes

Alison Civil schrijft;

Let’s take a look at Alison’s work… she put her mark on 2 drawings, and colored them both, and also colored my drawing.
WIP_1Colour_1
Set 2
WIP_2 Colour_2
And the colored version of my drawing. Do you see how different they all look, great job Alison, thank you very much!
Colour_3
And the last colorist for this blog will be Véro Pignot. She did a hell of a job, with a lot of work in progress shots, so I had to make a video of it…. she messaged me: It was so great to do this !!!!!! f**** now I want your book, I just wrote it on my wish list lol. It is really a great idea, really !!!!!

I see that Laurence and Véro had the same set to start, but they look so different because of what they did with my work, and they looked from a different perspective…. and I love all the work you four colorists did. We have another colorist who will work on a set, but she started with some colorings first…to get into the spirit…let us take a look at the colorings from Elisabeth Delhaye…. and a lot of wip scans to make a video of course!

Thank you Elisabeth…in the next blogs we will see your drawingskills!

I hope you enjoyed these gorgeous drawing skills from our colorists…. I am glad that they had so much fun doing the job!

That’s a lot of color to see, did it inspire you? Did I tell you before, what materials you can use in the Global Doodle Gems books? Because I tested a lot of different stuf in these books…. I can tell you about what I already used in it…. and I also tell you that I always use a cardboard sheet between the pages…. for you never know why!!

My favorite “normal” pens are the Stabilo 68, I know not the cheapest, but they color great! I am also a big fan from the Stabilo 88 fineliners and the Staedtler Triplus Brilliance, gorgeous colors. My favorite brushpens are the Sakura Koi, and they color gorgeous in the GDG Books. I even use alcoholmarkers, and yes I know, they bleed through the pages, but I don’t care, because the books are single side printed, and sometimes the back is beautiful too! I have used already my Letraset Promarkers and the ShinHan Twin Touch markers……. And there is a lot more I used, but I will mention that in a next blog for you!

GDG Individuals Isa Humeau Prigent “GraphiZen” Personal Review

Isa Humeau GraphiZen englishIsa Humeau Graphizen french

When I look to this cover, I like to have a look inside this book, I like the shapes, it makes me curious right away….

I like fire, and I like to color like fire….that’s why I choosed this drawing as my first in this book. nice and warm….. I started with Caran d’Ache Pablo & Faber Castell Polychromos

My fire is getting nice and warm… Let’s color the ring of hearts. I will use the Stabilo 88 Fineliners for that. It’s pretty detailled work which I like…

The finishing touch is done with my fingers, grab the color from the Van Eyck Pastel crayon, right out of the box, and put it on the paper… what will go pretty fine in this book!

My second drawing that I choose, is my “peacefull coloring”. When I feel restless, I like to color something like this, a lot of details, small spaces… so I work with Stabilo 88 Fineliners.

Isa & Johanna Ans (3)_wm Isa & Johanna Ans (6)_wm Isa & Johanna Ans (9)_wm Isa & Johanna Ans (11)_wm
I feel great, coloring this drawing, almost a petty that the most of the work is already done… The rings I will color with Stabilo 68 Pen

Isa & Johanna Ans (15)_wm
I was in doubt, if I should leave the white spaces white or color them…and how should I color them. Something like gems, I grabbed my Cd’A Pablo and FC Polychromos again…

And the third drawing should be just in between, not to detailled, but just fun to color. I colored with Bruynzeel Expression Color and a little bit of Van Eyck Pastel Crayon

I had a great afternoon, coloring these drawings. I like the book,, but even more the paper. Everything works so fine in it…. of course I always use a protectionsheet in between…you never know.

Isa & Johanna 3 (10)_wm

I made a small video too, to show you the whole work in progress from these 3 colorings…

I hope you liked my review. And if you want this book too, you can find it here
